Angling is one of the unique adventure activity pursued in Karnataka. The government runs a few river camps where angling and coracle rides are a part of the package offered. Angling or sport fishing is done in the many rivers that criss crosses the state with clear gushing water. Many of these rivers near Bangalore offer excellent angling holiday spots. The rivers in Karnataka are an abode to a large variety of fishes especially Mahseer which is the pride and joy of Cauvery and Asia’s premier sporting fish.
Mahseer - The Pride of cauvery
Catching the mahseer which can grow to over 100 lbs in weight, can easily swim upstream is easier said than done. The legendary fighting fish resists all attempts to catch it and there is a virtual tug-of-war between the angler and the fish for about 20-30 minutes. Fishing camps along the Cauvery have helped safeguard the habitat of the Mahseer. Also, most of the poachers have been rehabilitated and are employed as guides at the fishing camps
Coorg Wildlife Society..
Formed in 1980, the Coorg Wildlife Society is registered charity engaged in protecting mahseer fishing in the Cauvery. With a lease on 28 km of this river CWS has been stocking young mahseer in this stretch since 1993. The CWS protects this stretch of the river, issues fishing licenses, organises sport fishing and maintains fish catch statistics.
Angling - Sport Fishing..
Catch-and-release practice is followed in the fishing camps run by government. Every time a fish is caught, a camp attendant helps the angler remove it from the water, tie its mouth with a nylon rope, weigh it and pose for a photograph, after which the fish is let back into the river.
Angling is a method of fishing by means of an "angle" (fish hook). The hook is usually attached to a fishing line and the line is attached to a fishing rod. Fishing rods are usually fitted with a fishing reel that plays out the line. The hook itself can be dressed with lures or bait. A bite indicator such as a float is sometimes used. Angling is a principal method of sport fishing. Mahaseer commonly found in the rivers of Karnataka like Bheemeshwari is the primary target of angling enthusiasts.
